In Shrek Forever After, Shrek has grown tired of his life as a domesticated man. He longs for the days when he was free to roam and be a true ogre.

After being mean to his family and friends at a birthday party for his children, Shrek makes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin that will allow Shrek to have one day as an ogre in exchange for one day from his childhood. Shrek is enjoying his day of freedom until he realizes that Rumpelstiltskin is now the King of Far Far Away and hunts ogres so that he can use them as slaves. Shrek is captured by witches who take him to Rumpelstiltskin so that he can be a slave.

Shrek and Donkey escape from the castle and Shrek enlists the help of Donkey to find Fiona and save her from slavery. But Shrek must find her before his 24 hours are up or he will fade away forever. And the only way he can set things right is for Fiona to fall in love with him and kiss him before his time is up.
